Here are some of the ways in which a school psychologist can support students:
- Improve Academic Achievement through providing psychological and academic assessments, and collection and interpretation of student and classroom data
- Promote positive behavior and mental health by providing individual and group counseling; improving students communication and social skills and promoting problem solving, anger management and conflict resolution
- Support diverse learners by providing culturally responsive services to students and families from diverse backgrounds; assist in planning appropriate Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities; and collaborate with instructional staff to modify and adapt curricula and instruction
- Create safe, positive school climates by supporting social-emotional learning; assessing school climate and improving school connectedness; identifying at-risk students and school vulnerabilities; and providing crisis prevention and intervention services.
- Strengthen family-school partnerships by helping families understand their child's learning and mental health needs; connecting families with community service providers, when necessary; and helping students transition between school and community learning environments
- Improve school-wide assessment and accountability by monitoring individual student progress in academics and behavior; generating and interpreting useful student and school outcome data and serving, at the leadership level, on the school's Multi Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) team.
