Thanks to my school's PTA, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the National Association for School Psychologists Annual Convention in Atlanta, GA during the last week of February. Since then, I have been frantically putting my thoughts together in hopes of:
a) proposing a session for the 2020 Annual Conference in Baltimore, MD
b) inform my practices for the remainder of this year and into next year.
One thing that stuck out to me, as a practitioner, was the strategic goals of NASP:
• Shortages
• Social justice
• NASP Practice Model
• School psychologists as mental/behavioral health providers
• Leadership development
Working in a culturally and linguistically diverse school as Southwest has provided me the opportunity to address all of these goals in different ways; however, I still ponder what more I can do, as a practicing school psychologist, and an African American school psychologist to further the field. I came up with the following two goals to inform my practices:
1. Actively scout out more PD opportunities for myself to refine my practices
2. Consider the whole child in my day-to-day practices
Just the two simple approaches, I hope, will help me to be the best school psych I can be!
