Every year, on April 2nd, World Autism Awareness Day is recognized.
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC,) 1 in 59 students has autism. The prevalence is higher in boys than girls, and most cases aren't diagnosed until after the age of 4. Autism is prevalent in all socioeconomic and ethnic groups.
We've learned much about autism over the past 30 years of research. One thing we DO know is that early intervention is key. If, as a parent, you notice your child is delayed in their speaking ability, work with your pediatrician to look into a speech/language evaluation. With other developmental milestones, make sure you always talk to your child's pediatrician about any concerns or issues you've noticed, particularly changes noted in their behavior.
If a diagnosis occurs, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is also a great resource for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD,) particularly those who are nonverbal and present many challenging behaviors.
Taking care of a child with autism can be a daunting task. There are many organizations locally, as well as nationally, that partner with families and schools to support individuals living with autism. Those resources are located below:
